Bills Extend Invitation to 8-Year-Old Cancer Survivor After Shocking Incident
Mia DeCamilla, who was pushed down the stairs during a recent game, will be welcomed back for a future match.
Heartwarming turn of events, the Buffalo Bills have extended a special invitation to eight-year-old Mia DeCamilla, a two-time cancer survivor, after she was involved in a disturbing incident during last Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Mia, who has been cancer-free since May 2023, was pushed down a set of stairs by a belligerently drunk fan, but despite the traumatic event, she handled the situation with remarkable maturity, even offering advice to the team on how to improve safety and security for future games.
The DeCamilla family’s ordeal occurred when a male Bills fan, intoxicated and disruptive, shoved Mia aside, causing her to slip and fall down the stairs into the lap of a 49ers supporter. Mia’s father, Mikey DeCamilla, recounted the moments leading up to the accident, describing the fan as “belligerently drunk” and claiming the man was intentionally pushing through the crowd while throwing snowballs at opposing fans. The incident led to Mia sustaining a painful rib injury after hitting a seat as she tumbled down the stairs.
Despite the shocking nature of the event, Mia took it in stride, offering a calm but pointed suggestion for future Bills games. “I am feeling great,” she said. “I hope that the Bills realize that there’s an issue and you need to have security and make it more a family atmosphere and family event rather than a party house.” When asked if she would be willing to return to Highmark Stadium for another game in the future, Mia shook her head, expressing reservations about the environment.
In light of the incident, the Buffalo Bills organization reached out to the DeCamilla family, offering them an invitation to attend a future game once the situation is addressed. This gesture is part of the team’s commitment to ensure that Highmark Stadium remains a safe and family-friendly space for all fans.
Mikey DeCamilla explained that the family chose not to file a formal police report, though they did alert authorities about the incident. Despite the troubling experience, the DeCamillas have found support from the wider community, with many fans contributing to Mia’s GoFundMe page, helping to cover her medical expenses related to her cancer treatments.
While the family’s game day experience was marred by the unsettling incident, the outpouring of kindness from Bills fans has offered a silver lining. The story has since gained significant attention on social media, with many fans rallying behind Mia and her family, applauding her resilience and maturity.
The Bills have a series of back-to-back road games over the next two weeks, facing the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions before returning to Buffalo for a home game against the New England Patriots on December 22. Following that, the team will host the New York Jets on December 29. With the DeCamilla family’s heartfelt invitation in place, it is hoped that their next experience at Highmark Stadium will be a more positive one.
The team’s kind gesture underscores the importance of fostering a welcoming and secure environment for all fans, especially families like the DeCamillas, who have already endured so much.
