“Revolution in Waste: Thembisa’s Organic Waste Gets a Second Life”
Ground-breaking rapid composter turns waste into wealth in just 24 hours.

Thembisa is taking bold strides toward a sustainable future, thanks to an innovative machine capable of transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost in just 24 hours. This cutting-edge technology, unveiled by the Thembisa Self-Help Association for the Disabled (T-SHAD) in collaboration with key scientific and community-driven organizations, promises to revolutionize waste management and create opportunities for local communities.
The machine, introduced late last year, was spearheaded by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Compostable Plastics Council of South Africa, and Clean City SA. It was part of the Sebenzisa Thembisa Waste Challenge, an initiative under Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa aimed at addressing South Africa’s waste crisis by bridging the gap between academic research and community action.
With organic waste making up nearly 40% of all waste in South Africa and much of it ending up in landfills, this project couldn’t have come at a better time. Thembisa, grappling with the pressures of rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization, is especially burdened by inefficient waste management systems.
“This technology represents a leap forward for communities like Thembisa, where existing waste management systems often fall short,” said Dr. Sudhakar Muniyasamy, a principal researcher at CSIR. “Instead of organic waste rotting in landfills and producing harmful emissions, this rapid composter offers a sustainable alternative.”
How It Works: From Waste to Wealth
The rapid composter employs heat and microorganisms to process organic waste—ranging from animal to human and commercial waste—into compost within a single day. This nutrient-rich compost can be utilized to enrich community food gardens, support nutrition initiatives, or even be sold as a valuable agricultural product, fostering economic empowerment.
The initiative is not only addressing waste reduction but also aligning with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “The composter not only reduces waste but also supports circular economies by turning organic material into a valuable product,” noted Dalu Cele, founder and CEO of CleanCity SA.
Grassroots Implementation with T-SHAD
T-SHAD, a community-based development organization, was chosen as the pilot partner due to its existing recycling infrastructure and vegetable gardens. By integrating the rapid composter, T-SHAD is setting a new standard for how local organizations can drive sustainable development while empowering communities.
The project has also drawn attention to its potential to contribute significantly to climate action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated from decomposing waste in landfills. “By reducing landfill waste and providing practical solutions for communities to repurpose organic material, initiatives like this rapid composter project address urgent sustainability challenges while empowering local communities,” said Alana Kruger, country manager for Innovate UK Global Alliance Africa.
A Model for South Africa’s Future
Following its successful rollout in Thembisa, the CSIR and CleanCity SA are already exploring ways to expand the rapid composter initiative to other parts of South Africa. They are actively seeking partners to scale up the project and bring its benefits to more communities.
