Scandal, Retaliation, or Justice? Mapisa-Nqakula Corruption Case Heats Up

Former Speaker Faces Explosive Accusations Amid Political Turmoil

The corruption case against Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, former Speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly, has reached a dramatic turning point. Titled “Scandal, Retaliation, or Justice?” the unfolding legal battle raises questions about political motivations, accountability, and systemic corruption. Mapisa-Nqakula claims the charges are part of a smear campaign linked to her controversial role in the Section 89 inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa’s conduct.

From Investigator to the Accused

As Speaker, Mapisa-Nqakula led the Section 89 inquiry investigating whether President Ramaphosa breached the constitution in the infamous Phala Phala farm scandal. While the inquiry brought attention to Ramaphosa’s alleged misconduct, the African National Congress (ANC) used its majority to block impeachment proceedings, shielding the president.

Now, Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 corruption charges and one for money laundering. Prosecutors allege she accepted R4.5 million in bribes from defense contractor Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu to influence a major procurement deal. Mapisa-Nqakula strongly denies these allegations, calling them politically motivated and a direct response to her efforts to hold Ramaphosa accountable.

NPA Pushes Back on Political Claims

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has dismissed claims of political interference as “baseless.” Lead prosecutor Abram Binang asserts the case is backed by evidence, though some details remain confidential. However, Mapisa-Nqakula’s defense accuses the NPA of withholding critical information, undermining her right to a fair trial.

Key Witness Under Scrutiny

A new twist emerged when leaked documents revealed that the prosecution’s key witness, Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, has a documented history of fraudulent activities, including a prior conviction. This revelation has cast doubts on the credibility of the case. Mapisa-Nqakula’s defense is now pressing for full disclosure of Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu’s criminal record, arguing it could dismantle the prosecution’s claims.

A Test of Justice and Politics

This high-profile trial has sparked heated debate in South Africa, reflecting deeper issues of corruption and political retaliation. Supporters argue that Mapisa-Nqakula is being targeted for challenging entrenched power, while critics view the case as evidence of widespread corruption among the elite.

As the trial unfolds in the Pretoria High Court, its outcome will not only determine Mapisa-Nqakula’s fate but could also redefine accountability and justice in South Africa’s fraught political landscape.

I suggest that the entire Department of Defence be thoroughly investigated, they are just stretching the surface with Ms Nqakula, the corruption in that institution is almost normalized. Fiks
