SANDF Tightens Grip on Borders: A Game-Changer for National Security

South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has announced plans to tighten security along the South Africa-Zimbabwe border, a move sparking widespread attention. The SANDF is poised to ramp up patrols and deploy advanced surveillance technology to combat illegal crossings, smuggling, and other criminal activities threatening national security.

In a statement on Friday, SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Andries Mahapa emphasized the urgency of securing the 225-kilometer border, a hotspot for undocumented migration and illicit trade. “The SANDF is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our borders. Additional resources and personnel will reinforce efforts along the South Africa-Zimbabwe line,” Mahapa stated.

The decision comes amid mounting public pressure to address border security lapses, with communities near the border reporting increased crime, including livestock theft and trafficking. The SANDF’s strategy includes using drones, thermal imaging cameras, and mobile patrol units to deter illegal crossings while ensuring fair treatment for legitimate travelers and asylum seekers.
