EFF Demands Citizenship Revocation Over Trump’s Controversial Executive Order

South African Political Party Slams U.S. Refugee Offer for Afrikaners

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have called for the revocation of South African citizenship for any Afrikaners who accept U.S. President Donald Trump’s Executive Order granting them refugee status. The party condemned Trump’s move as a politically motivated attack on South Africa’s sovereignty and social cohesion.

On February 7, 2025, the EFF released an official statement via its @EFFSouthAfrica X account, denouncing Trump’s Executive Order, which was signed on February 4, 2025. The order grants Afrikaners refugee status in the United States, citing alleged discrimination by the South African government. However, the EFF has rejected this claim as a fabricated narrative designed to undermine the country’s democratic values.

According to the EFF, South Africans who accept Trump’s offer should forfeit their citizenship, as their actions suggest a rejection of the nation’s legal framework. The statement read: “South Africa must revoke the citizenship of any individual who assumes refugee status in the USA based on this Executive Order, as it would be a declaration of the belief that South Africa’s laws, which seek to promote equality and social cohesion, are not in sync with such an individual’s values.”

The EFF further linked Trump’s decision to South Africa’s involvement in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) case against Israel. The party asserted that the Executive Order was a reactionary measure aimed at punishing South Africa for its legal actions on the global stage. Additionally, the EFF urged the South African government to strengthen diplomatic ties with China, Russia, and other BRICS nations in response to this development.

This stance has sparked widespread debate, with some South Africans supporting the call for citizenship revocation, arguing that those who seek refuge abroad should not retain national privileges. Others have criticized the EFF’s position as extreme, emphasizing the right of individuals to pursue better opportunities elsewhere.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, has also condemned Trump’s Executive Order, calling it an unwarranted interference in the nation’s domestic affairs.

As diplomatic tensions escalate, the international community is closely monitoring the situation to see how both nations will navigate this growing controversy.
