COSATU Demands Ramaphosa Axe Non-Performing Ministers
South Africa’s largest trade union calls for accountability amid growing public frustration.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has issued a bold ultimatum to President Cyril Ramaphosa, urging him to dismiss cabinet ministers who fail to implement government policies and deliver on their mandates. As public dissatisfaction with inefficiency and poor service delivery grows, COSATU’s call for accountability has added fuel to the fire ahead of a potential cabinet reshuffle.
Speaking at a press briefing, COSATU General Secretary Solly Phetoe expressed sharp criticism of non-performing government leaders. “We cannot allow a situation where ministers remain in their positions while failing to deliver on the promises made to South Africans. This compromises the integrity of government and affects the most vulnerable,” he said.
The union federation underscored pressing national challenges such as soaring unemployment, the ongoing energy crisis, and the lack of effective service delivery, pointing fingers at a leadership vacuum within several ministries. According to COSATU, these issues have been exacerbated by the inability of some ministers to fulfill their responsibilities, jeopardizing efforts to achieve economic and social stability.
The call for decisive action comes as South Africa grapples with the fallout from years of corruption, mismanagement, and delayed reforms. Although COSATU acknowledged incremental progress in tackling state capture, it warned that the gains risk being overshadowed by a lack of leadership accountability. Phetoe highlighted the need for regular performance evaluations and immediate consequences for underperforming ministers as a step toward restoring public trust.
“Ministers who cannot execute their duties effectively should be replaced by capable individuals who can drive government programs forward. South Africans cannot wait indefinitely for results,” Phetoe added.
COSATU’s remarks arrive at a critical juncture for President Ramaphosa, who has faced increasing pressure to clean house and prioritize delivery on his administration’s promises. Political analysts suggest that the trade union’s demands could influence the composition of Ramaphosa’s next cabinet, with a reshuffle expected to address growing public dissatisfaction.
The federation’s stance aligns with widespread frustration over perceived government inefficiency. Recent surveys show declining trust in public institutions, a sentiment mirrored in ongoing protests and community unrest over basic service failures, power outages, and the slow pace of economic recovery. For COSATU, ensuring the accountability of ministers is essential to reversing these trends and steering the country toward stability.
While Ramaphosa has not yet responded to COSATU’s demands, analysts predict that growing calls for action from civil society and political allies could push him toward bold moves. The president has previously promised a government that delivers on its commitments and acts in the best interests of citizens, making the trade union’s statement a test of his leadership resolve.
South Africans will be watching closely as the cabinet reshuffle looms, with hopes pinned on a renewed focus on efficiency and transparency. For now, COSATU’s intervention has struck a chord with citizens demanding change, highlighting the urgency of decisive leadership in tackling the country’s most pressing issues.
Whether Ramaphosa will heed COSATU’s demands remains uncertain, but the federation has made its position clear: South Africa cannot afford to have ministers who fail to perform in a time of national crisis. As the pressure mounts, the president’s next steps will likely shape both his legacy and the country’s trajectory.
